Dr. Deetz will be speaking November 7th at 6pm in Wrather West Kentucky Museum. Dr. Deetz is a Research Associate at the James River Institute for Archaeology and Visiting Assistant Professor at Randolph College. She specializes in early African Diaspora cultural history, archaeology, slavery, visual and material culture, and public history.
Wrather West Kentucky Museum will be selling some copies of her book, Bound to the Fire, at the event. Her book is about the lives of enslaved plantation cooks and their impact on culinary and cultural history. Bound to the Fire: How Virginia’s Enslaved Cooks Helped Invent American Cuisine was named one of the top ten books on food of 2017 by the Smithsonian Magazine.
