Kentucky Lake Clean Up @ Hancock Biological Station

  • Hancock Biological Station 561 Emma Drive Murray, KY, 42071 United States (map)

Kentucky Waterways Alliance is co-hosting
cleanups across Kentucky in each of the seven major river basins as a part of our 2024
Commonwealth Sweep program which is made possible by a grant from Hydro Flask’s Parks for
All program.

The Kentucky Waterways Alliance and our partners Hancock Biological Station and the Watershed Studies Institute at Murray State University will host a cleanup to address litter in areas surrounding Kentucky Lake. Located in the Four Rivers Basin, Kentucky Lake serves as the largest man-made lake in the eastern United States, and as the 25th largest lake in the country. Kentucky Lake’s 250 square miles of water and 2,064 miles of shoreline attract boaters, campers, and anglers to explore its waters and large populations of smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish. Kentucky Lake as serves as a section of the “Great Loop” waterway, a 6000-mile-long boating route that circles much of the eastern United States and a small part of eastern Canada. Kentucky Lake lies in part within Murray Kentucky in Calloway County. Murray is home to more than 17,500 people as well as Murray State University. As part of Kentucky Lake, Murray is also associated with the “Land Between the Lakes”, a National Recreation Area that offers hiking, camping, and registered hunting on the land between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The Kentucky Waterways Alliance is thrilled to partner with organizations and communities striving to protect their waterways while promoting community engagement.
