The Department of Global Languages and Theatre Arts presents The Whole Town's Talking by John Emerson and Anita Loos.

The Whole Town's Talking will be performed in the Robert E. Johnson Theatre.

Plot:

The Whole Town’s Talking by Anita Loos and John Emerson was produced by the theatre organization Sock and Buskin in 1923 and the very first play ever produced on the campus of Murray State University. The play is a lost gem of the early American Theatre.

The play had a successful run in 1922 on Broadway, and there was a silent film version of The Whole Town’s Talking in 1927.

The play is an uproariously hilarious farce. The story revolves around a family and the wish of Mr. Ben Simmons for his daughter (Ethel) to marry his uncouth but sweet business partner (Chester Binney). Mr. Simmons concocts a plan to lie to Ethel on behalf of Chester, and the lie grows to the point where the entire town believes the lie, and the once uncouth Chester becomes the town celebrity. This production is guaranteed to leave you laughing and the whole town will be talking about it.
